Lincoln and Lancaster County residents have two free chances this week to drop off household hazardous waste at mobile collection sites in Hickman and Lincoln. (lincoln.ne.gov) The city said the events are scheduled for Friday, April 24, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hickman Fire Station, 401 W. 7th St., and Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Star City Shores, 4375 S. 33rd Ct. (newsbreak.com) Accepted items include pesticides, lawn and garden chemicals, household cleaning products, paint thinners, stains, polishes, waxes, turpentine, oil-based paint, pool chemicals, old gasoline, antifreeze, brake or power steering fluids, vape products, and mercury-containing items such as compact fluorescent bulbs and thermometers. (lincoln.ne.gov) The events are limited to household waste from Lincoln and Lancaster County residents, and business waste is not accepted. Prohibited items include latex paint, fertilizers, gas grill cylinders, medicines, electronics, firearms, ammunition, and batteries. (lincoln.ne.gov) Lincoln-Lancaster County runs the program through HazToGo, a drive-through hazardous waste service meant to keep toxic chemicals out of regular trash and the Bluff Road Landfill. The city’s waste management division said its work includes reducing exposure to hazardous materials and preventing improper disposal. (lincoln.ne.gov) The mobile events are part of a longer-running local system. The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department has operated a household hazardous waste program for more than 30 years, and the HazToGo facility opened in 2017. (lincoln.ne.gov) Residents who miss the mobile dates can still use HazToGo at 5101 N. 48th St., which the city says is open Wednesdays, Fridays, and the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (lincoln.ne.gov) City figures show about 3,500 households and small businesses use HazToGo each year, and the program diverted just over 130,000 pounds of household hazardous waste from the landfill in 2024-2025.
