Meta and Nvidia Announce AI Infrastructure Partnership

Nvidia's shares reached new highs after the company announced a major partnership with Meta to build next-generation AI infrastructure. The collaboration is intended to accelerate Meta's development in generative AI and virtual environments. Separately, Meta is consolidating its platforms, announcing it will shut down the standalone Messenger website in April 2026.

- Industry analysts estimate the long-term supply contract, which includes millions of AI chips, is valued at approximately $50 billion. This contributes to Meta's plan to spend up to $135 billion on AI this year, as stated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. - The partnership extends beyond GPUs, marking the first large-scale deployment of Nvidia's Arm-based Grace CPUs and incorporating future Vera CPUs. This move positions Nvidia as a direct competitor to established CPU providers like Intel and AMD in massive data center projects. - The agreement specifies that Meta will acquire both current-generation Blackwell and next-generation Rubin GPUs to power its AI data centers, which are optimized for both the training and inference of AI models. - A key part of the collaboration is Meta's adoption of NVIDIA Confidential Computing, a technology that enables AI-powered features while keeping user data encrypted during processing. This is already being implemented within WhatsApp to enhance privacy. - In addition to chips, Meta is integrating Nvidia's Spectrum-X Ethernet switches into its infrastructure to provide the high-speed networking required for large-scale AI workloads and to improve power efficiency. - This deal follows earlier reports in November 2025 that Meta was in talks with Google to invest in its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which briefly caused a dip in Nvidia's stock. - The shutdown of the standalone Messenger website and desktop app is part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and consolidate messaging functions within the main Facebook platform at facebook.com/messages. This reverses the company's earlier strategy of separating Messenger from the core Facebook app.
