New Zealand Reaches T20 Semis

New Zealand secured a semifinal berth in the T20 World Cup despite Pakistan's win over Sri Lanka. The qualification shows how tournament scenarios can hinge on net run rates and previous results rather than just final match outcomes.

New Zealand's path to the semifinals was secured not by their own play on the final day of the Super Eights, but by the outcome of the Pakistan versus Sri Lanka match. Pakistan needed to defeat Sri Lanka by a massive margin to overcome New Zealand's net run rate, specifically by restricting them to 147 runs or less. Despite a record-breaking 176-run opening partnership between Sahibzada Farhan, who scored a century, and Fakhar Zaman, who made 84, Pakistan could only post a total of 212/8. Sri Lanka, in their chase, surpassed the crucial 147-run mark in the 16th over, which officially ended Pakistan's chances and confirmed New Zealand's progression. The Black Caps' advancement makes this their fourth appearance in the men's T20 World Cup semifinals. They previously reached this stage in 2007, 2016, and 2022, and were runners-up in the 2021 tournament. In their final Super 8 match, New Zealand lost to England by four wickets. This loss put their semifinal hopes in the precarious position of relying on the Pakistan-Sri Lanka result. England finished at the top of Group 2, with New Zealand securing the second spot. The hero for Pakistan, Sahibzada Farhan, not only scored his second century of the tournament but also surpassed Virat Kohli's record for the most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition, finishing with 383 runs. Sri Lanka's captain, Dasun Shanaka, nearly pulled off an improbable victory in the final over against Pakistan, hitting a four and three consecutive sixes off Shaheen Shah Afridi. Sri Lanka ultimately fell short by just five runs, finishing on 207/6. New Zealand joins England and South Africa in the semifinals. The final spot will be decided in the upcoming match between India and the West Indies.
