Pokémon Competitive Scene Ends
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's "Season 41" will be its final Ranked Battle season starting April 1, 2026. The Pokémon Company is winding down seasonal content in anticipation of new franchise entries.
The end of ranked battles in *Pokémon Scarlet & Violet* signals a major shift for the Video Game Championships (VGC), the official competitive circuit since 2009. While online battles in the Gen 9 games will remain accessible, the conclusion of monthly seasons and their associated rewards marks a turning point as the competitive scene prepares for a new platform. For the first time, the Pokémon World Championships will not be played on a mainline series title. The 2026 competitive season will begin with *Pokémon Scarlet & Violet* for live tournaments, but will transition mid-season to the new battle-focused spin-off game, *Pokémon Champions*, which is slated for an April 2026 release. The 2026 World Championships in San Francisco will be held exclusively on *Pokémon Champions*. This transition means the path to the World Championships is also adapting. Players will continue to earn Championship Points by competing in live events such as Regional and International Championships using *Scarlet & Violet*. Online competitions, like the Pokémon VGC Grand Challenges, will also serve as a way to qualify. However, the in-game ranked ladder will no longer be a direct reflection of the official tournament format. The upcoming *Pokémon Champions* is designed as a streamlined, battle-centric experience and will incorporate mechanics from various eras of Pokémon, including Mega Evolution. It aims to be a dedicated platform for competitive play, separate from the traditional RPG entries. This shift comes as The Pokémon Company looks toward the future of the franchise. While *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* will introduce a new four-player "Battle Club" mode, this is seen as a more casual format and not the next stage for the official VGC. The next mainline series games, *Pokémon Winds & Waves*, which will mark the 10th generation of the franchise, are set for a 2027 release on the Nintendo Switch 2.
