Texans sign Braden Smith, bolster O-line

The Houston Texans signed former Colts OT Braden Smith to a two-year, $25 million contract, part of an effort to protect QB C.J. Stroud.

Smith's two-year contract is worth $25 million, with $13.5 million fully guaranteed. The Texans are looking to Smith to bolster their offensive line and better protect C.J. Stroud. Smith, who will turn 30 later this month, has started 105 of his 107 games in the NFL, all with the Colts since being drafted in 2018. He primarily plays right tackle but has experience at guard, adding versatility to the Texans' line. The Texans' offensive line has been a point of concern, leading to several changes this offseason. In addition to signing Smith, they've re-signed Trent Brown and Ed Ingram, while trading Tytus Howard and Juice Scruggs. Smith's return to form last season after dealing with mental health challenges in 2024 adds another layer to his story. He was recognized by the Colts with the Ed Block Courage Award for his courageous play and openness about his obsessive-compulsive disorder.
