Indian Exporter Finalizes US Rice Deal
Despite ongoing national export restrictions, an Indian rice exporter has sealed a 5,000-tonne contract with a buyer in the United States. The deal suggests that exceptions or special quotas may be possible even amid India's broader export curbs, which are intended to secure domestic food supply.
- The 5,000-tonne deal is for basmati rice, a variety that is not subject to India's export ban on non-basmati white rice. This exemption has allowed premium basmati exports to continue and even increase. - This specific sale is connected to a recent India-US trade agreement which will see the United States lower its reciprocal tariff on Indian goods to 18% from a previous 25%. - In late 2024, India lifted the ban on non-basmati white rice exports that had been in place since July 2023, replacing it with a minimum export price (MEP) of $490 per tonne. The export duty on parboiled rice was also reduced from 20% to 10%. - Competitor Vietnam is strategically shifting its focus from volume to value-added and premium rice, such as the ST24 and ST25 fragrant varieties, to increase profitability in the face of declining global prices for regular white rice. Vietnam is also pioneering the export of "low-emission" rice to markets like Japan. - European importers are facing stricter regulations, including the EU's Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticides, which are among the most stringent in the world. Compliance often requires certifications recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), such as FSSC 22000. - The European Union is considering a new "safeguard mechanism" that could limit rice imports from India and other Asian countries to protect its own rice growers and millers. This move is being watched closely by exporters of both basmati and non-basmati rice. - For traceability and sustainability, European markets are increasingly requiring certifications like EU Organic. The Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) has also launched an "SRP-Verified" ecolabel to help consumers identify sustainably produced rice. - The Thai baht is forecast to see fluctuations against regional currencies. Projections for early 2026 indicate a rate of approximately 835 THB to the Vietnamese Dong and around 2.91 THB to the Indian Rupee.
