H Mart to Open Largest U.S. Location in Fremont
The Korean grocery chain H Mart will open its largest U.S. store in Fremont, California. The new supermarket is expected to offer an extensive selection of Korean and other Asian food products and groceries.
- The new store will be a 100,000-square-foot, two-story building located in the Pacific Commons Shopping Center, taking over a former Kohl's building at 43782 Christy Street. - This project is the largest investment in H Mart's history and will serve as the flagship for the company's new multi-level prototype that includes dining and community spaces. - The ground floor will house the grocery store, while the second floor will feature a food hall with a mix of fast-casual and full-service restaurants, a bar, and entertainment offerings. - Construction is slated to begin in late 2026, with a projected opening in late 2027. - An entity tied to H Mart CEO Il Yeon Kwon purchased the property for approximately $18.3 million in December 2025. - Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan expressed support for the project, highlighting the "transformative investment" and the strategic reuse of a large vacant retail space. - This will be H Mart's fourth location in the Bay Area, joining stores in San Francisco, Dublin, and two in San Jose. - The new H Mart is part of a larger trend of Asian supermarket expansion in the Bay Area, with other chains like Jagalchi, T&T Supermarket, and Tokyo Central also growing their presence.
