Stanford Expert Urges Maternal Health Safety Reforms

Dr. Elliott Main, a childbirth safety expert at Stanford, highlighted the need for systemic changes to improve maternal health outcomes in the U.S. Key recommendations include implementing system-wide protocols to recognize complications and improving communication among caregivers. The expert stressed the importance for families to choose care teams committed to patient safety.

- The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of all developed nations, with approximately 700 women dying from pregnancy-related complications each year. - While California has one of the lowest maternal mortality rates in the U.S. at 10.1 deaths per 100,000 live births, the rate has more than doubled over the past two decades. - Significant racial disparities persist both nationally and locally; in California, the pregnancy-related mortality rate for Black birthing people is three to four times higher than for all other racial and ethnic groups. - An estimated 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. are considered preventable, highlighting the importance of systemic safety improvements. - Dr. Main is a founder of the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC), a Stanford-based group that develops evidence-based toolkits to help hospitals manage obstetric emergencies like hemorrhage and preeclampsia. - Leading medical causes of maternal death in California include cardiovascular disease, hemorrhage, and infection. However, recent national studies indicate that accidental overdose, homicide, and suicide are the leading causes of death among pregnant and postpartum women overall. - The risk of death extends long after childbirth; about one-third of such deaths occur from one week to one year after delivery. - Women aged 40 and older face a significantly higher risk, with a maternal mortality rate nearly five times greater than for women under 25.
