Marathon Shooter Wins Over Skeptics
PC Gamer's review of Marathon's server slam test praised its addictive extraction shooter gameplay after 21 hours, with the reviewer shifting from skeptic to fan. The test generated 2K likes as players discovered the game's tactical depth and replayability mechanics.
This new "Marathon" isn't a sequel but a revival of Bungie's very first FPS franchise, which predates both Halo and Destiny. The original trilogy, released for Mac OS in the mid-90s, was known for its complex storytelling and innovative features for its time. The upcoming title is a "PvP extraction shooter" set on the planet Tau Ceti IV, a departure from the original's narrative-driven single-player campaign. Players take on the roles of cybernetic mercenaries called "Runners," fighting each other and AI opponents to secure loot and escape alive. The core gameplay loop involves high-stakes matches where failing to extract means losing all the gear you've collected. Matches are primarily designed for three-player teams, though solo and duo queues are also possible, pitting multiple squads against each other in the same environment. Following the server slam, developer Bungie acknowledged significant player feedback. The extremely fast time-to-kill (TTK) became a major topic of discussion, with some players enjoying the brutal pace while others found it frustrating. Players also provided extensive feedback on the game's user interface and requested a dedicated queue for two-player teams. Bungie has stated it is reviewing these points, as well as performance issues on PC and the in-game economy for items like ammo and medical supplies, for potential changes.
