Nvidia Joins 6G Alliance
Nvidia is joining a new 6G alliance, signaling dissatisfaction with the capabilities of current 5G networks. The move suggests a major push from the AI chip giant to ensure next-generation wireless architectures are built with AI-native and satellite integration at their core.
Nvidia is a founding member of the AI-RAN Alliance, an organization with over 130 members dedicated to driving innovation in AI for radio access networks. This commitment was announced at Mobile World Congress alongside partners including Booz Allen, Ericsson, Nokia, SoftBank Corp., and T-Mobile. The core objective is to shift from using AI to merely improve existing 5G infrastructure to building 6G as a foundational "AI-native" platform. This involves embedding AI across the Radio Access Network (RAN), edge, and core to create a software-defined, secure, and continuously evolving system. In the United States, this strategy aligns with government and industry efforts to ensure North American leadership in next-generation wireless technology. Nvidia, along with partners like T-Mobile and MITRE, launched the AI-Native Wireless Networks (AI-WIN) project, an initiative described as an "all-American AI-RAN stack" to accelerate the path to 6G. The push comes as global standards bodies map the timeline for 6G. 3GPP, the key mobile standards organization, will conduct 6G studies in Release 20. The first 6G technical specifications are expected in Release 21, projected to be finalized around 2028, aligning with plans for initial commercial deployments by 2030.
