Axel Springer Acquires Bisnow

German media giant Axel Springer has acquired Bisnow, a major commercial real estate media and events company. The deal marks a significant consolidation in the B2B media space, with investment bank BrightTower advising on the sale.

This acquisition places Bisnow within Axel Springer's newly formed Brew Media Group, alongside the business-focused media company Morning Brew. This move is part of the German media giant's broader strategy to expand its footprint in the U.S. news market through investments in digital media companies. Both Bisnow and Morning Brew will operate as separate, independently run companies under this new umbrella. The deal marks a successful exit for private equity firm The Wicks Group, which acquired Bisnow in May 2016 for an estimated $50 million. Under Wicks' ownership, Bisnow expanded its digital media presence and its extensive events business, which hosts hundreds of gatherings for the commercial real estate industry annually. For Axel Springer, this purchase is the latest in a series of high-profile American media acquisitions. The company previously bought Business Insider in a 2015 deal that valued the company at $442 million and acquired Politico in 2021 for over $1 billion. These acquisitions underscore a "digital first, digital only" strategy for the U.S. market. The acquisition comes after a major corporate restructuring for Axel Springer. In a deal with private equity firm KKR, Axel Springer recently separated its media assets from its profitable classifieds business. This has allowed the media division, now a privately owned family business, to focus on its core journalism operations with a goal of becoming a leading transatlantic media company.
