Lower-tier Nvidia cards won't see the same gains, but it could make Linux a go-to platform for high-end gaming rigs [https://www.tomshardware.com/software/linux/rtx-5090-gets-12-percent-gaming-boost-in-ubuntu-26-04-thanks-to-optimizations-with-gnome-50-latest-popular-distro-update-brings-significant-performance-uplift-for-nvidias-top-gpu].
The Ubuntu 26.04 update, featuring Gnome 50, gives the RTX 5090 a performance boost due to distribution-level optimizations. Phoronix's testing showed performance improvements as high as 12% in some titles when comparing Ubuntu 26.04 to 25.10. The tests were conducted using a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, RTX 5090, and RTX 5080, all running on the Nvidia 590.48.01 Linux driver. The most significant gains were seen in Hitman 3, with an 11% increase on the RTX 5090. Counter-Strike 2 also saw an 8% improvement on the RTX 5090. However, some games, like Dirt Rally 2.0 and Strange Brigade, showed little to no difference between the two Ubuntu versions. Ubuntu 26.04 is the first version to feature Mesa 26, which includes ray tracing optimizations for Vulkan, contributing to the improved gaming performance. Gnome 50 also brings numerous optimizations and upgrades that enhance the performance of Nvidia's Linux 580-series drivers. The performance improvements appear to be most beneficial for high-end GPUs like the RTX 5090.
