Fremont police arrested an armed felon this week after officers found him hiding inside a garbage dumpster at the end of a foot chase. (kron4.com) The chase began at 8:38 a.m. Monday, April 20, when patrol officers tried to contact a man wanted on a felony warrant near Fremont Boulevard and Decoto Road, according to police. He ran instead, and officers followed him into a nearby commercial area. (kron4.com) Police said the man crashed through a barbed-wire fence during the pursuit and kept going before disappearing from officers’ view. Bystanders then pointed police toward the dumpster area where the suspect had gone. (kron4.com) A drone located the suspect inside the dumpster, and a Fremont police dog helped officers take him into custody, KRON reported, citing the department. Police said the man was armed when he was arrested. (kron4.com) The case shows how Fremont police are using several tools at once during searches, including public tips, drones and K-9 teams. The department lists active K-9 handler teams and says its dogs work with patrol, SWAT and tracking operations. (kron4.com; fremontpolice.gov) Fremont police also publish a public crime map that updates daily and says the city uses alerts, social media and CityProtect to push crime information to residents. The department says those tools are intended to improve transparency and crime-prevention awareness. (fremontpolice.gov; fremontpolice.gov) As of Thursday, April 23, Fremont police had not posted a separate press release about the dumpster arrest on the department’s public news page. Patch and KRON both reported the arrest on April 22. (fremontpolice.gov; patch.com; kron4.com) The suspect now faces the warrant that prompted the stop and additional scrutiny tied to the chase and the weapon police said he carried. The arrest ended where the man tried to vanish: inside a dumpster ringed by officers, a drone and a police dog. (kron4.com)
