Maldives Tourism Drops 23%

The Maldives, a popular destination for Indian tourists, has seen a sharp 23% drop in tourist arrivals in early March. The decline is being directly attributed to the Middle East conflict, which is rattling travel sentiment and disrupting regional connectivity.

The recent downturn follows a period of robust growth, with January and February 2026 showing year-on-year increases of 5% and 15.7% in tourist arrivals, respectively. The sharp reversal in early March saw daily arrivals drop by as much as 50% compared to previous peaks in February. This decline is a direct consequence of escalating military tensions involving Iran, the US, and Israel, which have led to widespread airspace closures across the Middle East. Major carriers, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, and flydubai, were forced to temporarily suspend flights to Velana International Airport in Malé, severely disrupting a key transit route for European and Middle Eastern visitors. Maldives' Tourism Minister, Thoriq Ibrahim, stated that 30-35% of the nation's tourists arrive via these Middle Eastern airlines. The flight disruptions have reportedly affected nearly 5,000 tourists who were already in the Maldives, leading authorities to grant visa extensions for those stranded. In response to the crisis, the Maldivian government is exploring ways to boost arrivals from alternative markets. Officials are looking to increase the frequency of direct, non-transit flights, with a particular focus on markets like China and India to mitigate the economic impact.
