India Post plans logistics overhaul

India’s postal network is being rebuilt as an e-commerce logistics platform, not just a mail service. On July 30, 2025, Minister of State Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar reviewed India Post’s mail, parcel and business strategy overhaul. (pib.gov.in) The ministry said the review covered real-time tracking, electronic proof of delivery, digital payments, open application programming interfaces, and one-time-password authentication for deliveries. Officials framed the project as a way to make India Post compete more directly in parcel logistics. (pib.gov.in) At that point, more than 86,000 post offices were already using the new platform, and the government said the full network of about 165,000 post offices would migrate by August 4, 2025. The same review said 344 dedicated delivery centres had been opened to support morning, evening and holiday delivery. (pib.gov.in) The overhaul sits inside India Post’s Information Technology Modernization Project 2.0, a program approved with an outlay of ₹5,785 crore over eight years starting in 2022-23. The Department of Posts said the new Advanced Postal Technology system was rolled out across all 1.64 lakh post offices. (pib.gov.in 1) (pib.gov.in 2) That system is built as a microservices platform, a design that breaks one large software stack into smaller connected services, and the government said it supports QR-code payments, OTP-based delivery and cloud deployment. India Post said the rollout was developed in-house by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology and hosted on the MeghRaj 2.0 government cloud. (pib.gov.in) The department said it trained more than 460,000 employees for the transition and that the system had already handled more than 3.2 million bookings and 3.7 million deliveries in a single day. Rural branch offices also received Android devices running an internal mobile app for digital signatures, real-time delivery updates and integrated payments. The July 2025 review said India Post was integrating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce and the Government e-Marketplace, two government-backed platforms used for online trade and procurement. India and Germany signed postal and logistics cooperation documents, and India Post and Deutsche Post agreed to work on cross-border e-commerce and time-definite international deliveries.
