AI Chip Startup MatX Raises Over $500M

AI chip startup MatX, founded by Google alumni, has raised more than $500 million in a new funding round. The company aims to develop advanced AI accelerators to compete directly with Nvidia in the growing market for specialized hardware. The funding was reported on February 24th.

- The funding round was led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness, an investment firm founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. Other notable investors include Spark Capital, Stripe co-founders Patrick and John Collison, and semiconductor company Marvell Technology. - MatX was founded in 2022 by Reiner Pope and Mike Gunter, who were previously engineers on Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) team, which develops custom AI accelerator chips for the company. - The company's first planned product is an AI accelerator chip named the MatX One, which it claims will offer higher throughput for Large Language Models (LLMs) than any currently available chip. - The MatX One chip will feature a "splittable systolic array" architecture and combine high-speed SRAM memory for low latency with High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) to support long-context models. - While the company did not disclose its exact valuation, it is now reportedly valued at several billion dollars. - MatX plans to finalize the chip's design in 2026, with initial shipments expected to begin in 2027. The chips are slated to be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). - This funding is part of a larger trend of significant venture capital investment in AI hardware, as investors seek alternatives to Nvidia, which currently holds an estimated 80-90% market share for AI training chips. - The startup's strategy is to sell to a small number of leading AI labs, and the new capital will be used to secure manufacturing capacity and necessary parts, which are currently in short supply.
