India Emerges as AI Infrastructure Hub
India is attracting significant investment in AI infrastructure, positioning it as a regional hub. Tata Consultancy Services and AMD announced a partnership to build AI data centers powered by AMD's Helios platform. Separately, AM Group is investing $25 billion to build a 1-gigawatt AI compute hub in Uttar Pradesh that will be fully powered by renewable energy.
- The Indian government's "IndiaAI Mission," with an initial outlay of over $1.2 billion, is a key driver for strengthening the nation's AI compute infrastructure. This initiative is part of a broader national strategy on AI, first introduced in 2018 with the goal of "#AIFORALL," focusing on leveraging AI for social inclusion and economic growth. - Projections show India's data center capacity could increase significantly, with some estimates suggesting a fivefold surge to 8GW by 2030, requiring approximately $30 billion in investment. As of the first half of 2025, India's data center inventory stood at 1,123 MW. - The AM Group's project in Uttar Pradesh will be developed in phases, with the first stage expected to be operational by 2028 and the full 1-gigawatt capacity targeted for 2030. The facility is planned to house around 500,000 high-performance chipsets. - The partnership between TCS and AMD will be implemented through TCS's subsidiary, HyperVault AI Data Center Limited, which was established to develop secure and reliable AI-ready infrastructure. The collaboration will provide an AI-ready data center blueprint supporting up to 200 MW of capacity. - Major domestic and international players are making significant investments in India's data center market, including Adani Group, which has committed $100 billion to build renewable-powered AI data centers by 2035. Other key players in the Indian data center market include NTT GDC India, STT GDC India, CtrlS Datacenters Ltd., and Yotta Infrastructure Solutions LLP. - Despite generating 20% of the world's data, India currently holds only 3% of the global data center capacity, indicating a significant area for growth. The AI infrastructure market in India is projected to reach $17 billion by 2027. - The AMD Helios platform, central to the TCS partnership, utilizes AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, next-generation AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs, and AMD Pensando Vulcano NICs. This collaboration builds upon a previous agreement from January 2026 to co-develop industry-specific AI solutions. - The AM Group's investment was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Invest UP, the Uttar Pradesh government's investment promotion agency, at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The project will be located in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area.
