UK Hospitality Leaders Decry Tax Policies

A UK Chancellor's advisor, Alex de Pledghe, claimed that Britain "does not need any more restaurants," sparking backlash from industry advocates. Sacha Lord, Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester, condemned the stance as "disgusting" amid tax hikes, urging the sector to unite against policies perceived as harmful.

- The UK hospitality sector is grappling with a 20% Value Added Tax (VAT), a rate significantly higher than the European average of around 9%. Industry advocates are pushing for a reduction to the 12.5% rate that was temporarily in place until March 2022 to provide relief. - From April 2025, the hospitality sector is projected to face a tax bill of £3.4 billion due to increases in National Insurance, minimum wage, and changes to business rates relief. - Alex de Pledghe serves as an entrepreneurship adviser to the government, and her controversial comments were part of an argument that ministers should prioritize high-growth industries like technology and advanced manufacturing over hospitality and retail. - The number of UK restaurants fell by 1.3% in 2025, and in the last quarter of that year, the hospitality sector saw a net loss of 382 venues, equivalent to four closures per day. Some industry data indicates that approximately 60% of new restaurants in the UK fail within the first year. - Sacha Lord is the chairman of the Night Time Industries Association, a major trade body for the UK's night-time economy. His criticism of tax policy is long-standing, and he has previously outlined a five-point plan to safeguard the sector, including a VAT cut and an overhaul of the business rates system. - The hospitality industry is the third-largest employer in the UK, with 40% of its workforce being under the age of 25. It contributes an estimated £54 billion in tax receipts to the economy. - In addition to tax pressures, the industry is dealing with significant operating costs from food price inflation, soaring energy bills, and a labor shortfall of over 100,000 workers as of early 2024.
