France's Culture Minister Resigns

Rachida Dati has resigned as France's Culture Minister to run for Mayor of Paris. The move signals a significant political shakeup for the city as Dati, a prominent figure, focuses her efforts on the upcoming mayoral election.

Rachida Dati's nearly two-year term as Culture Minister was marked by both support for fashion and significant controversy. Her tenure saw a €200 million budget cut for the ministry and a high-profile robbery at the Louvre that exposed security lapses, though she also launched initiatives to financially support young designers. Dati has long been a fixture in the fashion world, unapologetically embracing luxury brands and a glamorous image. She famously appeared on a magazine cover in a pink leopard-print Dior dress and has spoken about defying advice to abandon her high heels, viewing style as a powerful expression of femininity. This is not her first attempt to lead the capital; Dati, the long-serving mayor of the 7th arrondissement, also ran for Paris mayor in 2020. Her current campaign platform for the 2026 municipal election focuses on security, cleanliness, and budgetary responsibility. Her mayoral ambitions are shadowed by serious legal challenges. Dati is set to stand trial in September 2026 for corruption and influence peddling related to €900,000 in consulting fees from the Renault-Nissan alliance while she was a Member of the European Parliament. Adding to her legal woes, a separate investigation was opened in September 2025 into her failure to declare an estimated €420,000 to €600,000 worth of luxury jewelry. The undeclared items reportedly include a Chopard watch and pieces from Cartier.
