Sabres Goalie Sets NHL Record

Buffalo's Alex Lyon achieved a historic ninth consecutive road win as a goalie, propelling the Sabres to second place in the Atlantic Division. The streak breaks NHL records for goaltender road winning streaks. Carolina's power play has been equally dominant, scoring 30 man-advantage goals since December 2, ranking second in the NHL.

Alex Lyon's nine consecutive road victories join a select group of goaltenders in NHL history. The all-time record for a single season is 11, held by Evgeni Nabokov (2009-10) and Devan Dubnyk (2014-15). Lyon is now in the company of Hall of Famers like Glenn Hall and Gerry Cheevers, who also reached nine straight road wins in a season. The 33-year-old netminder's recent performance has been stellar, posting a 1.94 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage during his overall 10-game winning streak as of late January. This hot streak has been crucial for the Sabres, who have won 20 of their last 24 games, catapulting them into a competitive position in the Atlantic Division. Signed as a free agent to provide depth, Lyon has emerged as a key player for Buffalo. His consistent play has been a stabilizing force for a team that struggled in the early part of the season. The Sabres' recent success has them aiming not just for a playoff spot, but for a significant run, a goal that seemed distant just a few months ago. The Carolina Hurricanes' power play has undergone a remarkable transformation. Before December 2nd, their power play was struggling at a 13.7% conversion rate, ranking 30th in the league. Since that date, they have converted on 27.2% of their opportunities, the second-best in the NHL during that span, scoring 28 power-play goals. A key change for the Hurricanes was the addition of captain Jordan Staal to the top power-play unit. Known more for his defensive prowess, Staal's faceoff skills have been critical. Prior to the change, Carolina was winning just 47.6% of their power-play faceoffs, ranking 28th. Staal's presence has helped the team start with puck possession more consistently, providing an immediate boost to their man-advantage.
