Brooklyn Museum Hosts Lunar New Year Event

The Brooklyn Children's Museum hosted a Lunar New Year celebration today, featuring a range of cultural performances and interactive activities for families. The event was designed to engage children with the holiday's traditions and foster cultural appreciation.

This year's celebration ushers in the Year of the Horse, an animal representing bravery, courage, and change in the Chinese zodiac. The annual festival at the museum was presented in partnership with the New York Chinese Cultural Center, the Chinatown Community Young Lions, and NYC Council Member Susan Zhuang. The day's events included a variety of hands-on cultural activities. Artist Nelson Leung led a ColorLab art studio workshop on the significance of Chinese calligraphy, where participants could practice with traditional brushes and ink. Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to learn basic stances, strikes, and other techniques in a Kung Fu workshop presented by martial artists from the New York Chinese Cultural Center. Multiple performances and literary events were scheduled throughout the day. The New York Chinese Cultural Center presented a 30-minute program featuring a youth choir, Chinese folk music, and classical dance pieces. Families could also attend story time sessions with authors Yobe Qiu, reading from her book *Our Lunar New Year*, and Michele Wong McSween, creator of the Mandarin bilingual book series *Gordon & Li Li*. A major highlight of the celebration was the traditional lion dance parade, led by performers from the Chinatown Community Young Lions. The parade, complete with full-scale, authentic lion dance costumes, proceeded through the museum to bring good luck for the new year. The lion dance is a tradition rooted in the legend of the Nian monster, which was said to be afraid of loud noises and bright colors.
