The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame unveiled its 2026 class on live television during an April 13 episode of “American Idol.” (rockhall.com) Ryan Seacrest and Lionel Richie announced eight performer inductees: Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan. The Hall also named Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti, Queen Latifah, M.C. Lyte and Gram Parsons for Early Influence; Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller and Rick Rubin for Musical Excellence; and Ed Sullivan for the Ahmet Ertegun Award. (rockhall.com) The reveal aired during a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-themed “American Idol” episode in which the Top 11 finalists performed songs by past inductees and viewers voted live for the Top 9. The show cut the field to nine singers by the end of the broadcast. (rockhall.com; deseret.com) The Hall used the same eligibility rule it applies every year: artists become eligible 25 years after their first commercial recording. In this cycle, Phil Collins, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan were first-time nominees who went straight in. (rockhall.com) This year’s ballot started with 17 performer nominees announced on February 25, including Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Shakira, P!NK, New Edition and The Black Crowes, all of whom were left out of the performer class. The Hall says more than 1,200 artists, historians and music industry professionals vote on the final slate. (rockhall.com; nme.com) The television rollout ties one of music’s legacy institutions to a prime-time competition show owned by the same Disney media ecosystem that will also carry the ceremony. The 2026 induction ceremony is set for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, then will air on ABC and stream on Disney+ in December. (rockhall.com) The class also stretches the Hall’s usual genre boundaries, with hip-hop acts Wu-Tang Clan and Queen Latifah, soul singer Luther Vandross, British metal band Iron Maiden and pop-soul singer Sade all recognized in the same announcement. The Hall’s nominee list in February described the ballot as spanning artists whose work shaped “rock & roll and its continued impact on youth culture.” (rockhall.com; rockhall.com) Los Angeles gets the ceremony in 2026, but the Hall said the event will return to Cleveland in 2027. For now, the museum’s biggest annual announcement has already moved from a press release to live entertainment television. (rockhall.com)
