WoW Finally Adds Player Housing
World of Warcraft's 'Midnight' expansion introduces the game's first-ever fully-featured player housing system, letting players decorate and personalize homes in Azeroth while displaying in-game achievements. The long-requested feature launched alongside Silvermoon City's first major upgrade in 20 years.
Player housing has been one of the most requested features since World of Warcraft launched nearly two decades ago. For years, developers resisted, fearing it would pull players out of the world's shared spaces and make cities feel empty. An unused portal in Stormwind from the game's early days was originally intended to lead to a housing area that never materialized. The new system is being carefully distinguished from the controversial Garrisons of the *Warlords of Draenor* expansion. Unlike Garrisons, which were tied to player power and professions and led to players feeling isolated, the new housing feature is purely cosmetic and social, with no mandatory gameplay progression attached. Players will get access to extensive customization tools, including object scaling, rotation, free placement, and color dyes. The system will also allow players to import and share their designs. Homes will be situated in neighborhoods that can be public or private, holding up to 50 players. Blizzard has stated there will be no high purchase costs, competition for plots, or recurring maintenance fees to ensure the feature is accessible. Decorations will be unlocked through a wide range of in-game activities, including quests and raid boss drops. Houses are account-wide, allowing a player's Horde and Alliance characters to visit the same home. The accompanying update to Silvermoon City triples the capital's size, rebuilding areas that were previously ruins and making it a central hub for both factions. For the first time, the Blood Elf starting zones of Eversong Woods and Silvermoon City will be part of the main Eastern Kingdoms continent, removing the need for a loading screen. Players who pre-order the *Midnight* expansion will get early access to the housing feature in Patch 11.2.7, which will act as a preview before the full system, including neighborhoods, launches with the expansion on March 2, 2026.
