San Francisco's 'Bay Lights' to Return in March

The "Bay Lights" art installation on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is set to return on March 20, 2026, after a three-year absence. The 1.8-mile light sculpture has undergone an $11 million rebuild. Its reactivation will restore a prominent feature of the city's illuminated skyline.

- The original "Bay Lights" installation, which debuted on March 5, 2013, had an initial cost of $8 million and was estimated to generate up to $100 million in tourism revenue for the Bay Area annually. Local waterfront bars and restaurants reported a 30% increase in business attributed to the light sculpture. - The previous iteration of the lights went dark on March 5, 2023, exactly ten years after its debut, because the 25,000 LEDs were failing faster than they could be repaired due to the harsh marine environment of wind, salt air, and vibration. - The $11 million rebuild was funded entirely by private philanthropy from over 1,300 contributors, with no public funding. Major $1 million donations came from tech leaders like WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg and WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum. - The new installation, engineered by Iowa-based Musco Lighting, features 48,000 custom LEDs and is purpose-built to withstand the demanding conditions of the Bay Bridge, including wind, salt, and vibration, and comes with a 10-year warranty. - The non-profit organization Illuminate, led by founder Ben Davis, is the driving force behind the project, with light artist Leo Villareal designing both the original and the new installations. - Following the March 20th debut of the primary north-facing lights, an expanded phase called "TBL360" is planned. This next phase aims to add lights to the inward-facing cables, making the artwork visible to more communities in the East Bay and to drivers on the bridge. - The relighting date of March 20, 2026, was chosen to coincide with the 92nd birthday of former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown, for whom the western span of the bridge is named.
