Mediterranean Hiking Season Kicks Off
Mediterranean hiking season is launching with guided trails through Crete's gorges, Sicily's volcanoes, and Amalfi cliffs. Other adventure options include Ananthagiri Hills trekking through forests and medieval villages in India, plus Mill Creek MetroParks' 45+ miles of winter-friendly trails with icy waterfalls.
The main hiking season in the Mediterranean typically runs from spring (April-June) through autumn (September-October), avoiding the intense heat and tourist crowds of July and August. This period offers milder temperatures, clearer skies, and landscapes vibrant with either spring wildflowers or autumnal colors. Crete's most famous trek, the Samaria Gorge, is a 10-mile journey through a national park created in 1962. The trail, part of the E4 European long-distance path, descends 5,000 feet from the Xyloskalo trailhead to the Libyan Sea and typically opens to hikers from May 1st through October 30th. On the island of Sicily, trails on Mount Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano, offer a unique hiking experience across varied microclimates. Spring and autumn are considered ideal for trekking on the volcano's slopes, providing comfortable temperatures for exploring craters and lava fields as snow recedes. Italy's famed Amalfi Coast is home to the "Path of the Gods" (Sentiero degli Dei), a trail offering dramatic cliffside views of the coastline. The route connects the villages of Bomerano and Nocelle, winding high above the sea for approximately 4.8 miles (7.8 kilometers). Further east, the Ananthagiri Hills in Telangana, India, are the source of the Musi River and feature some of the oldest forests in the region. The area's trekking trails are known for being beginner-friendly and pass through coffee plantations that date back to the Nizam era. In Ohio, Mill Creek MetroParks offers a distinct winter hiking experience across its 52 miles of trails. The award-winning two-mile Gorge Trail loop and the West Gorge Trail are particularly noted for winter scenery, taking hikers past landmarks like Lanterman's Mill and the iconic Suspension Bridge.
