New Fiber Optic Tech for AI Unveiled
At MWC Barcelona, Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC) will unveil a new Hollow-Core Fibre (HCF) solution designed for AI infrastructure. The company says the next-generation tech enables ultra-low latency optical communication, a critical component for strengthening the performance of global AI systems.
Hollow-core fiber guides light through an air-filled channel, which allows signals to travel nearly as fast as in a vacuum, or roughly 30% faster than in traditional solid-glass fibers. This speed increase results in a significant reduction in latency, with hollow-core fibers exhibiting a delay of about 3.3–3.5 microseconds per kilometer, compared to approximately 5 microseconds per kilometer for standard fiber. Over a distance of 1,000 kilometers, this can reduce latency by as much as 1.54 milliseconds. This ultra-low latency is critical for AI workloads, where rapid data processing and real-time decision-making are paramount. For large-scale distributed AI training and inference tasks, minimizing communication delays between GPUs and data centers is essential for efficient model performance and can significantly shorten job completion times. The technology also allows for greater distances between data center sites without sacrificing performance, offering more flexibility in infrastructure location based on factors like energy costs. For the insurance industry, faster and more precise data analysis enabled by low-latency infrastructure can enhance AI-driven risk assessment models. These advanced models analyze vast datasets, including real-time information from telematics and other sources, to more accurately predict risks and inform underwriting and pricing decisions. This can lead to more personalized insurance products and quicker claims processing. In consumer-facing industries, the impact of low-latency AI is seen in enhanced personalization and improved user experience. Recommendation engines in retail and e-commerce can process user behavior in real-time to provide more relevant suggestions, which can increase sales and customer satisfaction. For applications like AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants, response times under 300 milliseconds are becoming the standard for a positive user experience. Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC), a major global supplier of fiber optic cables and preforms, has been expanding its international presence and R&D capabilities. The company has been actively involved in major infrastructure projects, including securing high-share bids for new fiber technologies with major telecom providers. This move into hollow-core fiber for AI applications aligns with their strategy of focusing on technological innovation to meet growing market demands.
