LA Ramen Scene Gets $2 Sapporo

Taipei's acclaimed Ramen Chikumo launched in Sawtelle with their signature tori-paitan broth and $2 Sapporo beers — a rare deal in the area that's shaking up LA's competitive ramen landscape. The 4.5-star Taiwanese import brings authentic flavors at prices that could disrupt the local scene.

Ramen Chikumo's story begins not in Taipei, but with its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. The brand honed its reputation in Taipei's fiercely competitive "first-tier ramen war zone," a district crowded with top-tier ramen shops. There, it became a late-night sensation, operating until 3 or 4 AM and earning the nickname "Taipei's Ultimate Late-Night Destination." The restaurant's Los Angeles debut introduces a broth less common in the local scene, which is largely dominated by tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen. Chikumo specializes in tori-paitan, a creamy, chicken-based broth that is considered one of the fastest-growing ramen categories in Japan. The broth is simmered for over 12 hours using whole chickens to develop a rich, natural umami flavor without any MSG or artificial additives. The Sawtelle neighborhood, where Chikumo has opened its first U.S. location, is a historic Japantown. Known as "Little Osaka," the area has a long history of Japanese-American culture and is now a bustling hub for trendy shops and a high concentration of popular ramen restaurants, making it a strategic but challenging entry point for a new contender. The $2 Sapporo deal, significantly lower than the typical $5.50 to $8.50 for a beer at nearby establishments, is a limited-time promotion celebrating the restaurant's new alcohol license, a feature considered essential to the authentic ramen experience in Japan and Taiwan. This aggressive pricing, coupled with ramen bowls starting at $18, positions Chikumo to compete with established Sawtelle favorites where similar bowls can cost between $18 and $23.
