Interstellar Re-Release Crosses $200M Domestic
Christopher Nolan's 2014 sci-fi epic *Interstellar* has surpassed $200 million in total North American box office receipts during its theatrical re-release. The milestone underscores the enduring audience appetite for ambitious, high-concept genre films on the big screen.
The 2024 re-release, celebrating the film's 10th anniversary, added over $15 million to its domestic total, pushing it past the $200 million milestone to a new lifetime gross of $203 million in North America. Globally, the film has now earned almost $730 million across all its theatrical runs. Initially released in November 2014, *Interstellar* grossed nearly $188 million domestically and over $681 million worldwide in its first run, making it the 10th highest-grossing film of that year. The film was produced on a $165 million budget and was considered a financial success. The anniversary run began as a limited one-week engagement but was extended due to strong audience demand. Despite playing in a relatively small number of theaters—starting in 165 and expanding to around 320—the re-release consistently ranked in the domestic top five during its run. The film's per-theater average during the re-release was remarkably high, with an opening weekend average of over $27,000 per screen, significantly outperforming the per-theater averages of new wide releases like *Moana 2* and *Wicked* during the same period. A significant portion of the film's success, both originally and in its re-release, is attributed to the premium IMAX format; more than an hour of *Interstellar* was shot with IMAX cameras.
