The Whiting Foundation named 10 writers as its 2026 Whiting Award winners on April 15, with $50,000 going to each recipient. (gpb.org) The winners are Negar Azimi and Karen Hao in nonfiction; Elaine Castillo, Hilary Leichter, and Lara Mimosa Montes in fiction; Hajar Hussaini and Brittany Rogers in poetry; and Shayok Misha Chowdhury, John J. Caswell Jr., and Nazareth Hassan in drama. (lithub.com) The awards were announced Wednesday night, April 15, and the foundation said the prize recognizes “outstanding accomplishments and promise” in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. (lithub.com, whiting.org) The Whiting Awards have been given every year since 1985, and the foundation says the grant is meant to give recipients an early chance to devote themselves fully to writing. (whiting.org) The foundation does not take applications for the prize. It invites nominators from across the country to propose one candidate each, and a separate annual committee of writers, scholars, and editors chooses the winners. (whiting.org) This year’s judges described the cohort as a “kaleidoscopic view of this moment,” citing work that ranges from reporting on artificial intelligence to poetry shaped by displacement and plays set for the stage. (gpb.org, lithub.com) Past Whiting winners include Colson Whitehead, Ocean Vuong, Tony Kushner, Alice McDermott, and Ling Ma. The foundation says earlier recipients have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Obie Award, and MacArthur fellowships. (gpb.org, whiting.org) The 2026 class is the latest group to join that pipeline: 10 writers, four genres, one night, and $500,000 in total support. (gpb.org, whiting.org)
