Guardiola praises Bernardo Silva

Pep Guardiola used a pre-match news conference on April 10 to do two things at once: call Bernardo Silva one of Manchester City’s most important players, and admit he still does not know whether Silva will stay past this season. That sounded strange because Guardiola was responding to fresh noise from inside his own staff. Assistant coach Pep Lijnders had said after City’s 4-0 win over Liverpool that Silva’s departure looked certain when his deal ends in June 2026. Silva is not some fringe veteran being praised on the way out. He signed a contract extension in August 2023 that runs until the summer of 2026, and Manchester City made him captain during the 2025-26 season. He has been at City since arriving from Monaco in July 2017, which means he has lasted through almost the entire Guardiola era. In a squad built on constant rotation, Silva became the player Guardiola trusted to fill whatever job the game needed that week. That is why Guardiola’s praise was so specific. He said Silva is the kind of player he judges in bad moments, because when the team is under stress Silva “always” steps forward and offers help. Silva’s value has never been about one giant number like Erling Haaland’s goals. It is closer to a utility knife: he can start in central midfield, drift wide, press full-backs, keep possession in tight spaces, and still cover huge distances without the ball. That versatility is one reason his future keeps turning into a yearly transfer story. Barcelona and Benfica have both been linked with him in recent windows, and each summer the same question returns because Silva is 31 and his contract now has only months left. Guardiola did not close the door on an exit. He said he would love Silva to stay, but also said the midfielder has not told him directly what he plans to do after June 30, 2026. So the message from City right now is not “deal done” or “goodbye confirmed.” It is that a player with nine seasons of service, a 2023 contract extension, and the captain’s armband is still being described by Guardiola as essential while the final decision remains open.
