- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu reviewed the Delhi Development Authority’s desilting action plan on May 13 and ordered monsoon-readiness work finished by June 15. - Officials told Sandhu that 22.2% of desilting across DDA’s 494.8 km drain network was complete, with 11 waterlogging hotspots identified for monitoring. - A central flood control room will monitor vulnerable stretches, and DDA officials are due to report progress again before June 15.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on May 13 reviewed the Delhi Development Authority’s desilting action plan and directed officials to complete all pending drain-cleaning work by June 15, ahead of the city’s monsoon season. Hindustan Times and other local reports said Sandhu told officials there would be no compromise on quality or timelines as the capital prepares for seasonal flooding risks. The review covered drains under the Delhi Development Authority, which oversees about 494.8 km of drains across six zones including Dwarka, Rohini, Narela, south Delhi, north Delhi and east Delhi, according to reports on the meeting. Officials told Sandhu that roughly 22.2% of desilting work had been completed so far, with Narela showing the fastest progress. (hindustantimes.com) Eleven waterlogging-prone locations were flagged during the review, with most of them in the south and east zones. Reported vulnerable stretches included the Okhla underpass, Sarita Vihar, Harkesh Nagar, the Dwarka flyover side road, Pathar Market in Dwarka Sector 20, crossings in Dwarka sectors 6 and 7, Janak Chowk T-point and Utsav Park in Patparganj. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) Nine high-capacity pumping machines have been deployed in the south zone and a separate pumping vehicle has been stationed in the east zone to respond to heavy rain and waterlogging, according to officials cited in local coverage. A central flood control room is also being set up for round-the-clock monitoring of sensitive points and faster response during the monsoon. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) The May 13 review comes as Delhi’s agencies face pressure to improve pre-monsoon preparation after repeated flooding complaints in recent years. Hindustan Times reported this month that the Irrigation and Flood Control Department had completed more than 57% of desilting across major drains under its jurisdiction, while separate city reviews have set deadlines for other agencies to finish drain work by late June. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a separate review in early May and set June 30 as the deadline for desilting of drains handled by departments including the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, New Delhi Municipal Council, DDA and the Delhi Cantonment Board, according to Hindustan Times. That report said action plans were presented by the agencies on desilting, drain construction, repairs and cleaning. (hindustantimes.com) Delhi’s monsoon preparation has long been complicated by multiple agencies controlling different stretches of drains and stormwater infrastructure. Hindustan Times reported in 2025 that the city had previously relied on around 10 bodies for stormwater drains, a fragmentation that officials and residents have linked to delays and uneven execution. (hindustantimes.com) June 15 is now the deadline Sandhu has set for DDA’s desilting work, while the central flood control room and pumping deployment are expected to stay in place through the monsoon response period. Officials said progress on desilting and waterlogging-prevention measures will be reviewed again before the deadline. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) (hindustantimes.com)
