Minecraft sequel named

Warner Bros. has officially listed the follow-up as A Minecraft Movie 2 on its 2027/2028 slate, signaling the studio is moving the franchise into sequel production after the first film’s strong box-office year ( ). The title reveal came as part of Warner’s CinemaCon presentation that grouped Minecraft among its top performers for the studio’s banner year (comingsoon.net).

Warner Bros. has put a plain, official name on its next Minecraft film: A Minecraft Movie 2. The studio listed that title on its 2027 and 2028 release slate during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas this week. (comingsoon.net) The sequel already has a date. Trade reports said Warner Bros. set July 23, 2027 for the follow-up, about two years after the first film opened in theaters on April 4, 2025. (variety.com, warnerbros.com) Warner used the CinemaCon slate reveal to place Minecraft alongside other franchise titles on its upcoming calendar. Coverage of the presentation said the studio grouped the property with films it sees as part of its next release pipeline for 2027 and beyond. (comingsoon.net, yahoo.com) That push follows a strong theatrical run for the first movie. Box Office Mojo lists A Minecraft Movie with a $162.8 million domestic opening weekend, while Deadline reported a $313.7 million global debut, both figures that put it among the biggest launches of 2025. (boxofficemojo.com, deadline.com) The property starts from a huge audience base before a ticket is sold. Guinness World Records, citing Mojang’s annual report, says Minecraft has sold more than 350 million copies, making it the best-selling video game of all time. (guinnessworldrecords.com) Warner’s first film leaned on recognizable names as well as the game brand. The studio’s official page says the 2025 movie starred Jason Momoa and Jack Black and was directed by Jared Hess as the first live-action big-screen adaptation of Minecraft. (warnerbros.com) Reporting around the sequel’s release-date announcement said Hess is returning to direct and co-write with Chris Galletta, though Warner has not publicly outlined the plot. Early reports also said no new casting details were announced with the date. (collider.com, variety.com) For now, the clearest update is the simplest one: Warner is no longer treating the follow-up as an untitled project. It has a release slot, a returning filmmaker, and now an official marquee name in A Minecraft Movie 2. (comingsoon.net, variety.com)
