Amazon is moving deeper into weight-loss treatment with a national program that ties One Medical visits to Amazon Pharmacy fulfillment and follow-up care. (health.amazon.com) The program routes patients through a licensed provider, ongoing check-ins, insurance and prior-authorization support, and prescriptions for drugs such as Wegovy and Zepbound if a clinician decides they fit. Amazon says patients can use their preferred pharmacy, but it is steering them to Amazon Pharmacy with free delivery and Prime pricing. (health.amazon.com) Amazon is also publishing price points. CNBC reported insured pricing starts as low as $25 a month, while cash prices begin at $149 a month for oral drugs and $299 a month for injectables including Wegovy and Zepbound. (cnbc.com) The medical pitch is that obesity treatment should look more like routine primary care than a one-time prescription. Amazon’s site says patients work with a dedicated provider over time, and CNBC reported the company is combining virtual visits, in-person care, prescription management, and pharmacy delivery in one workflow. (health.amazon.com; cnbc.com) The timing comes as coverage for these drugs is getting harder to count on. NPR reported on April 15 that insurers were dropping or tightening coverage for obesity drugs, and KFF said current law still bars Medicare from covering medicines when they are used specifically for weight loss. (wwno.org; kff.org) That squeeze helps explain Amazon’s emphasis on clear cash pricing and refill logistics. On its site, the company says the medication itself is not included in the treatment fee, and CNBC reported Amazon will also offer prescription renewals starting at $29 for message consultations and $49 for video visits. (health.amazon.com; cnbc.com) The drugs at the center of the program are called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1s. Amazon’s patient page says they can slow stomach emptying, reduce appetite, and cut cravings, and it lists weight-loss eligibility that includes a body mass index of at least 27 with a related condition such as hypertension or sleep apnea. (health.amazon.com) Amazon is not entering a blank market. One Medical has offered weight-loss services before, but this launch folds the category into Amazon’s larger health push, which already includes telehealth, in-person care, and pharmacy delivery. (onemedical.com; health.amazon.com) The next test is whether convenience can offset the cost and coverage gaps that still define obesity care. Amazon can streamline the visit, the prescription, and the delivery, but patients still need a clinician’s approval and, in many cases, insurance that will keep paying. (health.amazon.com; wwno.org)
