Hot Sauce Brand Heatonist's Rise
A recent podcast profiled the unlikely success of Heatonist founder Noah Chaimberg, who turned a hot sauce pushcart into the #1 brand on Amazon. The company's growth was supercharged by becoming the official partner for the viral YouTube show “Hot Ones,” demonstrating how niche products can achieve cultural relevance through savvy media partnerships.
Before launching Heatonist in 2013, founder Noah Chaimberg had a background in digital marketing and had previously run a healthy lunch counter in an MMA gym. His passion for flavorful, small-batch hot sauces, a contrast to the then-dominant market of extreme-heat-focused sauces, led him to start a curated pushcart at Brooklyn markets. The transition from a pushcart to a physical store happened in April 2015 with the opening of Heatonist's flagship tasting room on Wythe Avenue in Brooklyn. This was followed by a second location in Manhattan's Chelsea Market, establishing a physical space for customers to sample sauces before buying. The partnership with the YouTube show "Hot Ones" began in 2015, the same year the show launched. Heatonist was tasked with curating the lineup of increasingly spicy sauces for the celebrity interview show, a collaboration that would become central to both brands' identities. This collaboration has led to the co-creation of over 20 unique hot sauce flavors, including best-sellers like Los Calientes and The Last Dab. The success of these sauces has driven a significant retail expansion, moving beyond Heatonist's own stores and website. Heatonist has also engaged in numerous other collaborations with personalities and brands. These include a Louisiana-inspired hot sauce with UFC fighter Dustin Poirier and a line based on favorite foods with The Try Guys' Keith Habersberger. As of 2024, the company has dramatically expanded its retail footprint, bringing its popular "Hot Ones" sauces to over 8,000 stores across the United States. This includes major chains like Kroger, Publix, and Whole Foods, making the formerly niche products available nationwide.
