AI Can Now Order You a Pizza via UPI

Razorpay and NPCI have enabled "agentic payments" on the Claude AI model using UPI's Reserve Pay feature. This allows an AI to place orders on apps like Swiggy and Zepto and complete the payment seamlessly, positioning UPI as a backbone for conversational AI commerce.

The core technology enabling this is UPI Reserve Pay, which functions like a credit card pre-authorization for UPI. It allows a user to block funds in their account for a specific merchant for up to 90 days, from which the AI agent can make multiple debits without requiring a PIN for each transaction. This "Single Block Multi Debit" functionality is what gives the AI permission to complete purchases within a pre-approved spending limit. Unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit, the agentic payment system is currently in a pilot phase with a select group of users on platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto. The technical architecture connects Razorpay's payment infrastructure with NPCI's UPI rails and Anthropic's Claude conversational AI, removing the need for users to switch apps to complete a purchase. A user can issue a natural language command like, “Order my usual groceries before the match starts.” The AI agent then interprets the request, presents options from the service (e.g., Zepto), and upon a single confirmation, places the order and completes the payment via the pre-authorized UPI Reserve Pay limit. This move taps into a rapidly expanding market, with projections estimating India's conversational AI market could reach nearly $5.9 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of over 25%. The initiative goes beyond simple chatbots to create a seamless journey from product discovery directly to purchase within a single conversational thread. This is part of a broader strategic push by the NPCI to build a sovereign AI layer for India's entire payments ecosystem. The organization is collaborating with Nvidia to develop foundational AI models aimed at enhancing transaction security, fraud prevention, and operational intelligence across the UPI network. The competitive landscape for transactional AI in India is heating up. OpenAI has also initiated a pilot to let users complete UPI transactions directly through ChatGPT, signaling a wider trend where large language models are evolving from information tools into direct commerce platforms.
