LaVar Ball's push for Lonzo to join the Hornets isn't new; he publicly suggested the Hornets acquire Lonzo to play with LaMelo as recently as this month. He believes that even without LaMelo, Lonzo could lead the team deep into the playoffs due to his faster-paced style. LaVar has a history of making bold pronouncements about his sons' careers. Lonzo became a free agent in February after being traded to the Utah Jazz and subsequently waived by the team. The Hornets, however, traded with the Bulls for Coby White instead of acquiring Lonzo. LaVar claimed that having all three of his sons on one team would make them the most-watched team in the NBA. Lonzo's injury history is a significant factor in teams' hesitations. He has a long history of knee issues, including multiple meniscus tears and a cartilage transplant in March 2023. Since the 2020-21 season, Lonzo has not played in more than 50 games.
