India Smashes T20 World Cup Record
India posted 256/4 in 20 overs against Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup, with Tilak Varma blasting 44* off 16 balls, Hardik Pandya scoring 50 off 23, and Abhishek Sharma hitting 55 off 30. Abhishek earlier fired 33 off 13 in the opening burst, setting up one of the highest T20 World Cup totals ever.
India's mammoth total of 256/4 is the second-highest team score in the history of the Men's T20 World Cup. The all-time record remains with Sri Lanka, who blasted 260/6 against Kenya during the inaugural tournament in 2007. This offensive explosion marks a new record for India, surpassing their previous T20 World Cup high of 218/4 against England, also set in 2007. That famous match in Durban was remembered for Yuvraj Singh's historic six sixes in a single over. The 2026 tournament has seen a number of high-scoring affairs. Prior to India's record-setting match, the West Indies had posted an imposing 254/6 against the same Zimbabwean team in a Super Eights match at Wankhede. This was the second time India and Zimbabwe have faced each other in a T20 World Cup. Their previous encounter was in the 2022 edition in Melbourne, where India secured a 71-run victory. While India has a dominant record, Zimbabwe did manage to defeat a new-look Indian side by 13 runs in the first match of a five-game T20I series in July 2024.
