Boat Ends Up on 91 Freeway
In a uniquely Southern California traffic event, a boat careened onto the 91 Freeway in Bellflower. The runaway vessel caused significant traffic disruptions but resulted in no reported collisions or injuries. Authorities are investigating how the boat became detached from its trailer.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on a Sunday when the small boat detached from a U-Haul trailer traveling eastbound. It then launched over the center divider, landing in the westbound carpool lane of the 91 Freeway near Bellflower Boulevard in Lakewood. Dashcam footage from a Tesla captured the dramatic moment the boat went airborne, narrowly avoiding a collision with the vehicle. The driver of the U-Haul did not stop at the scene, and the California Highway Patrol is now searching for them. Authorities were able to clear the wreckage and reopen the affected lanes within approximately two hours. Trailer detachments can be caused by a number of factors, including coupler failure, improperly connected safety chains, or a failure of the breakaway brake system. Common issues leading to trailer breakdowns also include underinflated or old tires, rusty axles, and problems with wheel bearings and hubs. Annually, there are around 50,000 accidents in the U.S. caused by trailer hitch failures. These incidents result in over 20,000 injuries and more than 400 fatalities each year. Under California law, all trailers on public roads must be registered with the DMV and equipped with safety chains. Trailers weighing over 1,500 pounds are required to have their own braking system, and those over 3,000 pounds need a breakaway system that automatically applies the brakes if the trailer detaches. The maximum speed limit for any vehicle towing a trailer in California is 55 mph. Additionally, vehicles with trailers are not permitted to use the far-left lane on highways with three or more lanes in the same direction.
