Joe Lovano Named Detroit Jazz Fest Artist-in-Residence
Renowned saxophonist Joe Lovano has been named the 2026 artist-in-residence for the Detroit Jazz Festival. He is expected to feature prominently throughout the celebrated annual event.
A Grammy-winning saxophonist, Lovano's career is marked by a prolific, standard-setting run on Blue Note Records, where he released nearly 25 albums as a leader starting in 1990. His 2000 album "52nd Street Themes" won a Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. He is a celebrated collaborator, known for his work in a long-standing trio with drummer Paul Motian and guitarist Bill Frisell, both fellow Berklee alumni. This group, active since the 1980s, became a benchmark for collective improvisation and interplay. Lovano has also played with jazz giants like Woody Herman, Elvin Jones, and John Scofield. The artist-in-residence role at the Detroit Jazz Festival extends beyond the stage.
