Detroit joins Michelin

The Michelin Guide has added Detroit to its coverage, part of a push into the Great Lakes region that the guide says will target six new cities there (clickondetroit.com) (tripwishlist.com). Separately, Boston received six Bib Gourmand awards in this round of recognition, highlighting accessible, high‑quality dining options (wror.com).

Detroit restaurants are now in Michelin’s line of sight for the first time, after the guide added the city to a new American Great Lakes edition. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the expansion on April 7 and said the new regional guide will cover six cities: Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. The inaugural restaurant selection is scheduled for 2027. (guide.michelin.com) That means Michelin inspectors are now evaluating Detroit restaurants for stars, Bib Gourmand awards, and recommended listings under the same system the company uses in other North American markets. Michelin says its inspectors judge quality, technique, harmony of flavors, the chef’s voice, and consistency. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) Michelin’s move extends a rapid United States expansion beyond its older strongholds in New York, California, Illinois, and Washington, District of Columbia. In the past two years, the guide has also rolled out new regional coverage in places including Colorado, Texas, the American South, and Boston. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) Boston offers a recent example of what that rollout can look like. Michelin’s official Boston listings currently show 26 restaurants in and around the city, including six Bib Gourmand picks for lower-priced, high-quality cooking and one one-star restaurant. (guide.michelin.com) (boston.eater.com) Bib Gourmand is Michelin’s value category, separate from stars. Michelin describes it as an award for “good quality, good value cooking,” which is why cities often point to Bib selections as proof that recognition is not limited to tasting-menu dining rooms. (guide.michelin.com) For Detroit, the addition puts the city on a global restaurant map that influences tourism, reservation demand, and chef recruiting in markets Michelin enters. Michelin’s own announcement framed the Great Lakes launch as part of its travel-and-dining strategy for “new destinations.” (guide.michelin.com) The guide still has not named any Detroit winners, and it will not do so until the 2027 reveal. Until then, the headline is simpler: Detroit is being judged by Michelin now, and the results are coming next year. (guide.michelin.com)
