Fox ESS Claims Record 97% Energy Storage Efficiency
Renewable energy firm Fox ESS announced it has achieved a record System Performance Index (SPI) of 97% for its energy storage solutions. The milestone, ranked by HTW Berlin, gives the company the top position for efficiency, a key metric for the economic viability of battery systems.
The HTW Berlin "Energy Storage Inspection" is a significant independent benchmark for photovoltaic storage systems in the German-speaking world. The System Performance Index (SPI) it uses is a comprehensive metric that evaluates the overall efficiency of a system under realistic operating conditions, not just the efficiency of individual components. Fox ESS's record-breaking 10 kW DC system achieved its 97% SPI with the PQ-H3-Ultra-10.0 hybrid inverter and the EQ3300-5 battery. This system distinguished itself with a high average efficiency of 97.6% and a remarkably low standby power consumption of only 4 watts. This achievement marks a notable improvement over previous top performers. In the 2025 inspection, the highest SPI recorded in the 10 kW category was 96.4% by an RCT Power system. The year prior, in the 2024 10kW scenario, a BYD BatteryBox system paired with a Fronius inverter reached a high of 95.4%. The efficiency of a home energy storage system is crucial as it directly impacts savings. Most modern lithium-ion batteries have a round-trip efficiency of 90-95%, meaning some energy is always lost during charging and discharging. A higher SPI, like the 97% achieved by Fox ESS, signifies less wasted energy and more stored solar power available for the home. This new record is part of a broader trend of increasing efficiency in the sector. In HTW's 2020 inspection, only two systems achieved the highest "A" efficiency class, a number that grew to six by the 2022 report, indicating rapid technological advancement across the industry. The Fox ESS system that topped the chart uses Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery chemistry. This technology is known for its superior thermal stability and safety compared to some other lithium-ion chemistries and notably does not contain cobalt, addressing ethical production concerns.
