IBF Withdraws Opetaia Title Bout

The International Boxing Federation has withdrawn its sanction of the cruiserweight title bout between champion Jai Opetaia and Brandon Glanton, set for March 8. The fight will go forward without the IBF title on the line, a rare move that leaves Opetaia's championship status unresolved. This decision introduces significant uncertainty into the cruiserweight division.

The International Boxing Federation's move to strip Jai Opetaia of his cruiserweight title is rooted in a conflict with the fight's promoter, Zuffa Boxing. The IBF initially approved the bout against Brandon Glanton but withdrew its sanction after the fight was also promoted for Zuffa's new cruiserweight title. Opetaia's team had reportedly assured the IBF that the Zuffa belt would only be a "trophy or token of recognition," but the subsequent promotion as a world title bout led to the reversal. Under IBF Rule 5.H., a champion participating in an unsanctioned contest within their weight limit will have their title declared vacant, regardless of the outcome. This means that as soon as the bell rings for the March 8 fight, Opetaia will no longer be the IBF champion, and the title will not be on the line for either fighter. This is the second time Opetaia has lost the IBF cruiserweight title outside of the ring. In late 2023, he vacated the belt to fight Ellis Zorro instead of his mandatory challenger, Mairis Briedis. Opetaia regained the vacant title by defeating Briedis in a rematch in May 2024. The Australian champion originally won the IBF and *The Ring* magazine titles in a grueling 2022 match against Briedis, where he suffered a broken jaw in two places. Despite the injury, he won by unanimous decision. He will still defend his *Ring* magazine title against Glanton. The IBF has a history of stripping champions for not adhering to its rules, including failing to face mandatory challengers. Notable fighters who have been stripped by the IBF include Canelo Álvarez, Gennady Golovkin, and Michael Spinks. With the IBF belt now vacant, the organization is expected to order a fight between its highest-ranked contenders to fill the vacancy. This decision complicates Opetaia's stated goal of becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion, as he will now need to reclaim the IBF strap.
