Israel Strikes Iran Leader's Bunker

Israeli warplanes struck Iran's Supreme Leader's bunker using over 50 warplanes in a dramatic escalation. Trump is reportedly demanding Iran's "unconditional surrender" while Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister warned Tehran is prepared to "put an end to the presence of the United States in the region."

The long-running "shadow war" between Israel and Iran has now erupted into open military conflict. For years, the two nations engaged in a proxy war, with Iran backing militant groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, and Israel conducting covert operations and airstrikes against Iranian-linked targets in countries like Syria. This direct strike on a high-level leadership target signifies a dramatic departure from that previous doctrine. Before this direct confrontation, the conflict was characterized by clandestine operations. A notable example was the Stuxnet computer worm, a sophisticated cyberattack believed to be a joint U.S.-Israeli effort that damaged Iran's nuclear centrifuges in 2010. Additionally, a number of key Iranian nuclear scientists have been assassinated over the past two decades, acts widely attributed to Israel. At the heart of the decades-long animosity is Iran's nuclear program. Iran has long asserted the program is for peaceful energy purposes, a claim disputed by Israel and Western powers who fear the development of nuclear weapons. This led to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an international deal to limit Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, from which the U.S. withdrew in 2018. This adversarial relationship is a stark reversal of their historical ties. Prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was a key ally of Israel in the region. Following the revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini's new Islamic Republic re-cast Israel as an enemy of Islam, severing all diplomatic and commercial ties. The recent escalation follows a series of tit-for-tat attacks that began in late 2024. These included an alleged Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consulate in Syria and Iran's first-ever direct missile and drone assault on Israel in retaliation. This cycle of direct military exchanges has shattered the previous norms of their conflict. The strike on the Supreme Leader's bunker is part of a broader Israeli operation that has also targeted key nuclear facilities at Natanz and Fordow, as well as missile production plants. This campaign represents Israel's most significant direct military action against Iran, moving their conflict into a new and unpredictable phase.
