Flyover Construction to Disrupt Gachibowli Traffic
Work has begun on the construction of multi-level flyovers near the IIIT Hyderabad campus in Gachibowli. Commuters in the area, a major technology hub, are advised to expect delays and plan alternative routes, especially during peak hours.
- This construction is part of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's (GHMC) comprehensive Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) aimed at creating signal-free traffic flow in the city. - The project at the IIIT Hyderabad junction is estimated to cost ₹500 crore and includes multi-level flyovers and an underpass, with a target completion date of May 2028. - The area currently handles a massive volume of traffic, with approximately 2.6 to 2.8 lakh vehicles traveling between Lingampally and Gachibowli daily. - During peak hours (8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.), motorists can already spend about 10 minutes waiting at the IIIT junction signals. - To manage the traffic flow during the construction, which is expected to cause significant disruptions for two months, authorities have planned several diversions. For example, traffic from ZPHS towards Gachibowli will be rerouted via Rolling Hills towards the Shilpa flyover or through the DLF road. - The most significant disruptions are anticipated during the excavation for the underpass, which will require digging across a substantial portion of the existing road. - This project is one of several major infrastructure upgrades in the Hyderabad IT corridor; other recent or ongoing projects include flyovers at Kondapur, Khajaguda, and Wipro junctions. - Upon completion, the Gachibowli flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area for the next 20 years, accommodating a projected peak hour traffic of 17,711 passenger car units by 2036.
