Woonsocket Group Pushes DV Awareness

Following a recent tragedy in the city, a Woonsocket coalition is underscoring the importance of domestic violence awareness. The group is launching efforts to increase community understanding and promote prevention strategies.

Woonsocket has the highest rate of domestic violence in Rhode Island, a factor that contributes to the city also having the highest level of child abuse and neglect in the state. This issue is a significant contributor to homelessness in Rhode Island and is intertwined with poverty and lower levels of educational attainment in the Woonsocket community. The city has been the location of multiple domestic violence homicides in recent years, prompting increased calls for community action and resources. These tragedies have brought heightened awareness to the need for comprehensive support for victims and preventative measures. In response, the Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center (BVAC) has expanded its services to Woonsocket, offering comprehensive support to survivors of domestic violence, including crisis intervention, emergency shelter, and legal advocacy. This organization plays a crucial role in the community's response to domestic abuse and has been actively involved in vigils and calls for community solidarity. Sojourner House, another key agency, has also increased its presence in Woonsocket by opening a public location to provide services to victims and survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and human trafficking. The organization offers a range of services including a 24/7 hotline, support groups, and housing assistance. Statewide, the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence (RICADV) supports these local agencies and advocates for policies to protect victims. One such policy is the Protect Rhode Island Families Act, which aims to disarm domestic abusers. For local professionals and businesses, opportunities to engage include partnering with organizations like BVAC and Sojourner House, participating in awareness campaigns, and implementing workplace policies that support employees who may be experiencing domestic violence. Financial literacy workshops and other community education initiatives are also part of the expanded services where business expertise can be valuable. Support services are available 24/7 through the statewide domestic violence helpline at 1-800-494-8100. The Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center's helpline is 401-723-3057, and Sojourner House's helpline is 401-765-3232.
