J.L. Engel's supernatural thriller preorders

J.L. Engel announced preorders for his supernatural thriller *Where the Children Don't Play* (out April 30), described as "Stranger Things mixed with IT" [https://x.com/JLEngel5/status/2031372453738590624].

Engel, a corrections deputy and former amateur kickboxer, drew inspiration from fatherhood and a desire to create a character who rights wrongs. He wanted to create a character unbound by rules, someone who could "eat other characters for breakfast". *Where the Children Don't Play* explores darker, more intense themes, which Engel often tempers with humor in his writing. Engel's previous work includes the crime thriller *A Dangerous Man*, featuring a character inspired by 80s action heroes who rescues trafficking victims. Readers who enjoy *Stranger Things* and *IT* might also appreciate similar supernatural thrillers. Shows like *Dark*, *The Umbrella Academy*, and *The Haunting of Hill House* also blend horror, sci-fi, and coming-of-age elements. Engel started writing in sixth grade, encouraged by a teacher who recognized his talent. Despite early success, he almost didn't pursue writing, working as a personal trainer and corrections deputy before returning to his passion.
