Tiafoe Eyes Biggest Career Title
Frances Tiafoe is one win away from the biggest title of his career at the ATP 500 event in Acapulco after a series of hard-fought matches. Social media shows he saved 2 match points to edge Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in earlier rounds, setting up this breakthrough moment.
A victory in Acapulco would secure Frances Tiafoe's first-ever ATP 500 title. This tournament category represents the fourth-highest tier in men's professional tennis, behind only the Grand Slams, the ATP Finals, and the Masters 1000 events. Tiafoe currently holds three ATP titles, all from the lower-tiered ATP 250 series. He claimed his first championship in 2018 at the Delray Beach Open, becoming the youngest American to win an ATP title since Andy Roddick in 2002. His other two titles came in 2023, one on clay at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston and another on grass in Stuttgart. A win in Acapulco would not only be his biggest title but also his first on a hard court since his breakthrough in 2018. The son of immigrants from Sierra Leone, Tiafoe's journey in tennis is notable. He and his twin brother grew up at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in Maryland, where their father worked as the head of maintenance. This is Tiafoe's eighth appearance in the Acapulco tournament, and his first time reaching the final. To get there, he had to overcome fellow American Brandon Nakashima in a dramatic three-set semifinal that lasted nearly three hours. In the final, Tiafoe will face Italian Flavio Cobolli. For Cobolli, this also marks a significant career moment, as he is seeking his first ATP 500 title. A former top-10 player, Tiafoe reached a career-high ranking of World No. 10 on June 19, 2023. His most prominent Grand Slam performance was a semifinal run at the 2022 US Open, where he defeated Rafael Nadal.
