Platforms are pricing for agentic AI

Vendors are repositioning products as platforms where external agents can operate, not just UIs with assistants. Shopify published an AI Toolkit that links tools like Claude Code and Gemini CLI to stores, and ServiceNow is bundling AI, data connectivity, workflow execution, security and governance across its product packages (geekseller.com; itwire.com).

Software vendors are changing what customers buy: not an assistant inside the screen, but a platform where outside AI agents can do work. (shopify.dev, newsroom.servicenow.com) Shopify put that shift into product on April 9, 2026, when it released the Shopify AI Toolkit. The toolkit connects Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Visual Studio Code, and Codex CLI to Shopify docs, API schemas, code validation, and store actions through the command line interface. (shopify.dev, shopify.dev) ServiceNow made a pricing move the same day. Its April 9 announcement said every product now includes artificial intelligence, data connectivity, workflow execution, security, and governance, instead of selling artificial intelligence as a separate purchase. (newsroom.servicenow.com) An AI agent is software that takes a goal, looks up the right tools, and carries out steps on its own. Shopify is exposing store operations to those agents, while ServiceNow is packaging the controls, data links, and workflows those agents need inside enterprise software. (shopify.dev, newsroom.servicenow.com) Shopify had already been laying groundwork in May 2025. Its Summer ’25 Edition introduced Shopify Catalog for shopping agents, a Knowledge Base app for AI-readable store information, and Storefront Model Context Protocol tools for on-site agents that can answer questions, build carts, and guide shoppers to checkout. (shopify.com) The new toolkit pushes that idea from shopper-facing agents to operator-facing agents. Shopify’s docs say the plugin auto-updates, and the GitHub repository is published under an MIT license as a public project for agent plugins and extensions. (shopify.dev, github.com) ServiceNow started this packaging shift earlier, at Knowledge 2025, when it launched AI Control Tower to govern agents, models, and workflows from one platform. In April 2026, it extended that approach across the full portfolio and added Context Engine plus Build Agent skills so developers can build from their existing tools and deploy to ServiceNow. (servicenow.com, newsroom.servicenow.com) That packaging is already showing up on product pages. ServiceNow’s current IT Service Management plans list Foundation, Advanced, and Prime tiers, pairing each tier with a different level of AI capability, from task-based support to specialists that “independently manage” workflows. (servicenow.com) The commercial logic is straightforward: if customers expect agents to touch inventory, tickets, approvals, and workflows, vendors need to sell access, execution, and guardrails together. Shopify is doing that with plugins and command-line access; ServiceNow is doing it with bundles that fold artificial intelligence into the base platform. (shopify.dev, newsroom.servicenow.com) The result is a quieter rewrite of software pricing. The user interface is no longer the only product surface; the agent entry point is becoming one too.
