Nvidia Revives Older GPUs to Ease Shortage

To address ongoing GPU shortages, Nvidia is restarting production of its older RTX 3060 chips via Samsung. The move is intended to ease supply constraints for both enterprise customers and gamers who have been struggling with availability and high prices.

The revival of the GeForce RTX 3060 is a strategic maneuver driven by intense demand for cutting-edge manufacturing capacity, largely fueled by the artificial intelligence boom. Nvidia's latest "Blackwell" and "Ada Lovelace" GPUs are produced by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) on its highly sought-after 5nm nodes. With TSMC's capacity strained to meet the voracious appetite for new AI chips, restarting production of an older, yet still capable, GPU on a different foundry's less-congested process offers a path to increase overall supply. Samsung's 8nm process, which was used for the original "Ampere" architecture GPUs launched in 2021, will be utilized for this renewed production run. This avoids creating further competition for the limited advanced node capacity at TSMC, which is critical for Nvidia's lucrative data center and AI accelerator business. For Samsung, this deal reactivates a paid-off and reliable manufacturing line, potentially boosting profitability. This decision also serves as a response to ongoing market pressures that have kept GPU prices high for both gamers and enterprise customers. The market has weathered years of shortages stemming from a perfect storm of pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, logistics issues, and surges in demand from cryptocurrency miners. Though the impact of crypto mining has waned, the AI gold rush has created a new, massive demand driver. The RTX 3060, first released in 2021, remains a popular mainstream graphics card capable of handling most modern games at 1080p resolution. Reviving it provides a proven, cost-effective option to fill a gap in the market, especially as U.S. export controls on advanced AI accelerators have led Nvidia to seek alternative products for markets like China.
