UP Government and Walmart to Boost MSME E-commerce
The government of Uttar Pradesh has partnered with Walmart to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the state expand into e-commerce and exports. The collaboration will focus on providing training and support for digital integration. This initiative is part of a broader trend of public-private partnerships aimed at enabling small businesses to participate in the digital economy.
- This partnership is an extension of Walmart's Vriddhi Supplier Development Program, which was launched in 2019 with the goal of training 50,000 MSMEs across India. The program provides free training and mentorship to help small businesses digitize and participate in national and global supply chains. - The collaboration aims to directly support Uttar Pradesh's "One District One Product" (ODOP) scheme, which promotes specialized local products like leather goods and carpets. Flipkart's existing partnership for the ODOP scheme has already seen a 52% quarterly growth in sales for these products since January 2020. - MSMEs in Uttar Pradesh will receive hands-on support for onboarding onto the Flipkart and Walmart Marketplaces, giving them access to a wider customer base. This is part of Walmart's larger objective to triple its annual exports from India to $10 billion by 2027. - The initiative is aligned with the Uttar Pradesh Export Promotion Policy 2025–30, which aims to position the state as a significant e-commerce export hub. The state is home to over 9 million MSMEs and aims to increase its goods and services exports from $21 billion in 2024 to $50 billion by 2030. - This formal agreement builds on previous efforts, including the 2021 launch of a Walmart Vriddhi e-Institute in Agra, which focused on the city's prominent footwear manufacturing and stone carving sectors. - The program is implemented in India through a partnership with the Ideas to Impact Foundation (i2i). So far, the Vriddhi program has already trained over 70,000 MSMEs across the country.
